Strategy
A new residence on the Devon coastline, Baggy House posed a number of interesting design challenges: an exposed site, intermittent usage, and a complex arrangement of levels to be serviced.
The clients’ desire for minimal running costs led to the choice of passive conditioning wherever possible. Externally insulated concrete walls help stabilise internal temperatures, while high-quality windows minimise heat losses through infiltration. A passive central duct system with dampers on timers ensures that the tightly sealed house receives sufficient ventilation while unoccupied. All climate controls operate in both occupied and unoccupied modes, and can be switched remotely to prepare for the arrival of the occupants.
