Strategy

Designed to evoke Buffalo’s heritage as America’s “gateway to the west” and accentuate the downtown area’s connection to its waterfront, Canal Side represents a sustainable future in waterfront redevelopment. The project will consist of commercial, cultural, and residential space which thoughtfully integrates interpretive features and towpaths while allowing for plentiful open public space and sustainable water management solutions.

The sustainable guidelines developed by Atelier Ten outline seven general sustainability categories: Access and Connectivity; Energy; Indoor Environmental Quality; Water Management; Outdoor Environment and Site Construction; Material Resources and Waste Reduction/Recycling; and Operation and Maintenance. While the primary purpose of the guidelines is to establish key performance areas to ensure a sustainable development, the guidelines will ultimately improve the overall experience at Canal Side by shaping the design of comfortable and enjoyable space for visitors.
