Strategy
As with many of its projects, Atelier Ten worked closely with the architectural team to use the building’s elegant design to maximize its envelope efficiency. Super-insulated walls and roof and a high exposed thermal mass stabilize interior temperature fluctuations. High-performance glazing prevents the loss of energy in the winter and heat gain in the summer. The building can therefore operate without mechanical cooling when outdoor conditions permit natural ventilation.
Heating and cooling is provided by a combination of geothermal wells, highly-efficient air-handling units, and displacement ventilation which distributes air evenly and consistently year round. Finally, the building’s trusses made from Yale’s sustainably-managed forests provide a beautiful visual reminder of the building’s high sustainable ambitions.
