Atelier Ten designed a theatrical, visually
engaging lighting system for this high-end
furniture showroom, which uses less than 1.0
watt/square foot. This scheme is 62% better than
the 2.4 w/sf allowed by Chicago’s energy code
and 80% better than the 4.5 w/sf used by most
Mart showrooms.

Strategy
This lighting design is the result of a rapid, but highly collaborative, high-concept design, specification, installation, and focus involving Atelier Ten, interior design firm Gary Lee Partners, and its subsidiary furniture company, TG Couture. The team wanted the showroom to be as energyefficient as possible, given the Merchandise Mart’s LEED-EB rating and focus on energy conservation. This was all accomplished with a carefully designed wattage-limiting track system using 20W CMH spot and narrow flood luminaires and T5HO wallwashers.
