Gardens by The Bay, Singapore

Opened in November for the World Orchid Conference

Dehumidification and cooling is key to achieving the required environmental conditions of this ambitious project.

At the heart of our energy cycle is a large biomass heating plant drawing on a combination of forest thinnings from the clients’ tree maintenance programme and packing case waste streams from the nearby port. Heat from the biomass is used to drive a turbine for power generation, feed absorption chillers and to dry liquid desiccants which are used to dry the air in the biomes.

The Supertrees conceal the vertical ducts and flues necessary to support this process while providing a location for solar photovoltaic panels. The net result, two of the world’s largest conditioned conservatories, 5° north of the equator, that are carbon neutral in cooling.
