Visual quality and a welcoming patient environment are the key design drivers for this state-of-the-art cancer facility. Atelier Ten is supporting this aim by optimizing a facade which provides useful daylight while reducing peak load solar gains.

Strategy
This clinical outpatient facility is located at the Biomedical Campus of the University of Arizona in downtown Phoenix. The facility will contain clinical and research areas, a radiation oncology space, and physicians’ offices.
During the design stages, Atelier Ten is working with the architect to optimize the facade to reduce annual and peak solar gains on the south and west facades, and to improve daylight quantity and quality on the north and west. Atelier Ten is also supporting the design development of an atrium with an optimized aperture and clerestory glazing with overhangs to filter direct sun.
