Strategy

Newark is planning a major expansion in order to further improve the level of passenger service. Airport terminals by their sheer size and nature of operations are large consumers of resources, particularly energy, and thus represent excellent opportunities for meaningful change.

Through comprehensive building performance energy modeling and an integrated design process, Atelier Ten identified site-wide sustainability goals and worked with the design team to develop high-performance building concepts for the façade, mechanical systems, as well as conducting life-cycle costing and incorporating the potential future costs associated with carbon emissions.

This effort will ensure that Newark Terminal A achieves frugal and responsible energy use, minimizes fossil fuel dependence, and carbon dioxide emissions which are all critical issues for the Port Authority’s environmental aims.
